The Feral Dilemma

catsunlimited.org

What is a feral cat? A feral cat means a wild cat. A cat living in an untamed environment or a cat that may have been domestic at some point and was abandoned and has turned feral just to survive. The Rockbridge County area has a large feral population. We can address as many of the feral problems that we possibly can. Again the numbers are staggering. This is a very serious problem all over the country because unless these animals are sterilized they continually have litters and feral colonies begin.

Why do we focus on ferals and strays? We concentrate on these two types of cat problems because these are always the first to be euthanized (killed) at the animal shelters, and they are continuing to add to the feral population.

The strays often belonged to someone who never took the time to spay or neuter them. They stray from home looking for a mate, and never find their way home again. Quite often, these are the cats that find a mate and give birth outdoors. This is the beginning of a feral kitten problem soon to be a feral cat colony. We help with domestic cats and kittens also, but our main focus is the real rescues -- the strays and ferals.

You can help by ensuring your pets are spayed and neutered.
